The primary purpose of an NA group is to carry the message to the addict who still suffers by providing a setting for identification and recovery where an addict can come for help if he or she has a desire to stop using. The purpose of an Area Service Committee is to be supportive to the NA Group and its primary purpose by associating the Group with other groups locally and by helping the Group deal with its day-to-day problems and needs.
EMASCNA Statement of Purpose
To unify the groups within the Area, help the groups carry the message to the addict who still suffers, and build a sense of community among recovering addicts in the Eastern Maine Area. We are a pooling place where all opinions are welcome so a loving higher power may prevail to meet the needs of the participating groups. This committee is directly responsible to the participating groups, as voiced through Group Service Representatives (GSRs). The final responsibility and authority for NA services rests with the NA groups.
EMASCNA Structure
The EMASCNA consists of an executive committee and a number of committees formed to perform specific duties. Both the executive committee and the various committees are accountable to the groups. Each group is represented by a Group Service Representative; these select leaders, delegate responsibility, and develop policy for the EMASCNA.

Hospitals & Institutions
The purpose of an H&I meeting is to carry the NA message of recovery to addicts who do not have full access to regular Narcotics Anonymous meetings. H&I meetings/presentations, except for those in longer term facilities, are intended to simply introduce those attending to some of the basics of the NA program.
Public Relations
The purpose of public relations work in Narcotics Anonymous is to inform the public that NA exists and offers recovery from the disease of addiction. A public relations committee helps to ensure that accurate information about our fellowship is available to the public. The Eastern Maine Area Public Relations (PR) Committee has been given the responsibility of public relations efforts for the Eastern Maine Area.
